Acrylic and Mixed Media Processes – 8 week course with Deanna Wood

Expand your skill set by learning new mixed media techniques and processes. In this 8-week class we will explore different techniques and experiment with various products that you can incorporate into your painting repertoire. Develop your work and personal vision in new exciting ways. The class will also include discussion and experimentation with the elements and principles of design.
Each class will include thorough demos with lots of time to work.
Week 1 – collage
Learn several techniques to create your own collage papers, including scumbling/dry brush, wet-on-wet, washes, and sgraffito. Then use your unique papers to create a collage piece.
Week 2 – texture
Explore techniques and products that will allow you to create interesting texture in your work. You will be able to experiment with various texture gels and pastes that can add dimension, texture, and pattern.
Week 3 – Yupo
Experiment with liquid watercolor and inks on non-absorbent Yupo paper to create colorful, vibrant, expressive artwork.
Week 4 – transfers
Learn techniques to transfer laser printed imagery into your work. We will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of solvent and matte medium techniques to transfer images.
Week 5 – stencils and masks
We will look at ways to incorporate commercial stencils, as well as techniques for making your own.
Week 6 – stamping and printing
Explore commercial stamps and printing products and also learn to see potential stamps in everyday objects. We will explore additive and subtractive techniques with stamping. We will also briefly look at ways to incorporate simple printing techniques into your work.
Week 7 – altered books
Week 8 – drawing media
Learn techniques to transform an old book into a journal, sculpture, or other work of art.
Explore ways to incorporate drawing media such as charcoal, pastel, graphite, and colored pencils into your work.

acrylic matte medium (16 oz bottle)
acrylic gloss medium (8 oz bottle)
tool box/tackle box (for supplies)
acrylic retarder (4 oz)
